Moses

Who am I? This is a question we all wrestle with. Some of us spend a lifetime trying to figure this out. For most of us, who we are has been told to us by others, and we are trying to live up to it. But for some, they are trying to make themselves into who they think they’re supposed to be. Maybe according to family expectations, or those of a friend group, or society as a whole. But, in reality, there is only One, our Maker, who can tell us who we really are, our true identity. And, it’s only our creator who can tell us what our individual purposes are in this world.

Moses, the name means “Drawn out”, as in being drawn out of the water. Born to a Jewish mother at a time when all male babies were to be cast into the Nile, Moses was placed in a basket. It’s the daughter of Pharaoh who finds Moses among the reeds and takes him to be her own son and raises him in the palace. Fast forward, after murdering an Egyptian and fleeing, Moses finds himself in the wilderness, raising sheep. Then one day, Moses has an encounter with God, who is speaking to him out of a burning bush. Through this interaction, Moses is informed that God has big plans for him. Plans that involve freeing God’s people from Egypt, and Moses is His chosen representative. Initially, Moses is not on board with this plan, but God convinces him otherwise. What was Moses issue? What did God say that changed his mind? What was Moses process of going from the palace, to the wilderness, and back to the palace? Who is Moses?

Well let’s read Exodus chapters 1-3 and take a closer look.
