The disciples begged Jesus, “Lord, teach us how to pray.” They wanted to pray like they witnessed him praying. They wanted to know God like he knew him. They wanted to enjoy the Father’s presence in the same way that Jesus seemed to enjoy him. The Lord's Prayer is Jesus' answer to this request.
