International Ministry

The vision for UPI extended to the world in 1982. The first UPI international team consisted of Tom Roy, and three volunteers, Jake Boss from Michigan, Dr. Andy Hill from Illinois, and Al Strong, Michigan. Tom had taken his college baseball team to Puerto Rico the previous year and had seen the tremendous interest that country had for the game. In conjunction with Joe Cora and the local church, the first team travelled there and held baseball clinics. The Division has now expanded to over 50 countries including Russia, China, Japan, the Dominican Republic, Australia, Uganda, Kenya and throughout Europe.

By invitation from the host country, we have opportunities to travel overseas to conduct baseball clinics, speak in schools and churches, and show those we come in contact with the love of Jesus. We work primarily with local missionaries, helping them and churches reach their communities and, in many cases, open new doors of opportunity for the Gospel, all because of people's interest in baseball.  Some countries are closed to the Gospel, though, so in those countries we work through the government or local baseball authorities.

Over the years, many current and former MLB ballplayers have had the opportunity to travel with a UPI team member to many of the countries listed above.  It is a time of stretching for the team and learning to serve, many times in very impoverished areas.  These players have been given an incredible platform in order to share their faith and they are being obedient to the Lord’s command to, “Go…”.  Invariably, though, the Lord ends up doing an amazing work in the hearts of these ballplayers and they return challenged and changed!
